How do I form a corner in a square crochet project?

When I try to crochet square projects (like doilies, rugs etc.) and am not using a pattern, I find it difficult to get a definite corner done in crochet. The corners look circular instead of square and seem to blend in. How do I give it a definite corner look? Is there a specific method or formula I can use or is it just guesswork? Help appreciated! :)

  1. What kind of corner? I have made crochetted baby blankets that I have to make triangles to make the piece squared off. Kind of hard to explain.. This pattern has triangle pattern in it.. Good luck http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/cjif-AAmericanGrannySquareThrow.html?noImages=
  2. Yep!! there is a formula for it. LIke if you want to make a granny square you do (3 dc, ch 3) 4 times. sl st to first dc, sl st to first ch 3, ch 3 (for first dc, 2 more dc, ch 3, then go to next corner and 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc and 2 more corners after that. Do you see the corners forming? That is basicly what you need to do on other things that start round in the middle and go square. If you start with 5 sets of dc instead of 3 you get pentagon, 6 sets you get hexagon 8 sets and you get octogon. since you want a square, you must plan in the corner things with 3 chains at the corner with matching "posts" on either side. 1 chain in between side blocks.
  3. Are you talking about working the square in the round, as in granny squares? To get a nice sharp corner in a granny square-type motif, you can use a taller stitch in the corner of the last round. For example, if you have been working a 5 dc corner in the final round, work (2dc, tr, 2dc) in the corner of the last round to make the corner less rounded and more pronounced. Try it!
