How do I take measurement for making a crochet top?

I am trying to make a top out of crochet, but i do not know how to size it and shape it. Also am not sure about shaping the necks for various patterns. As of now am able to make square necks, but not able to start the sleeves correctly. It looks out of shape. Can anyone give me specific instructions or at least give me pointers to online material.

  1. If you are fairly new to this, why not start with a pattern from here? http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/ They are all free. Any problems post back, or ask here: http://www.crochetville.org
  2. try a tape measure
  3. The first measurements you need are for the body you are making it for. Measure bust, length to underarm from finished length you want and likewise back of neck to finishe length. You can draw a diagram of the top and use these measurements to decide on the size of the top. Add 2" to the bust size and then divide the number in half. This is the width of the back and front. The simplest design would have a square neck and square armholes. Draw these on your diagram and mark in the measurements you have already taken. (Back length minus underarm length gives you the armhole depth). Use you tape measure and a bit of guessing to decide how deep and wide to make the neck, or measure and existing garment. Start crocheting.
