What is a good book to teach me how to crochet?

Hello, A friend of mine who lives far away from me showed me how to crochet but she went way too fast and I'm clueless. So now, I have a hook and yarn but I have no idea what I'm doing. I am literally ready to cry as I really want to learn how to do this. Can anyone give me the name of a book that will teach me how to crochet from the very beginning? I literally want something that will treat me like I'm in kindergarten! Thanks so much!

  1. I know it's possible to learn from a book, but honestly, you will be much better off taking a class. Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Joanns all offer classes that are reasonably priced--probably about the same as you would pay for the book. If there aren't any craft stores near you, see if there is a branch of Project Linus in your area--I'm sure someone there will be willing to help you out. There are also numerous online tutorials with really excellent videos and written instructions. But whatever you do, don't give up! Crochet is an incredibly rewarding hobby. The creative possiblities are nigh endless, and you can really make someone's day with a homemade gift. Not to mention the satisfaction of weariing or using somethingyou made yourself.
  2. Check out the "How to Crochet" kits at Wal-Mart or Joann's Fabric. They give detailed instructions. On "You Tube" there are many instructional video's for basic crochet instructions. A local yarn shop may offer classes. I love to crochet, I know you will succeed because you have a strong desire to learn. :) Good Luck!
  3. You tube is good for videos. Or you can go to your local library and see what they have. Check out several books as each one will present it in a slightly different way. That way one may be clear where another isn't. Hope that makes sense! Good Luck!
  4. Check out Leisure Arts "I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting": http://www.leisurearts.com/all_skills/crochet/default.asp?display=detail&item_num=4061&sort=title&page=24&rec_num=230&from=BK&startRec=230 It's a good reference book to have on hand, especially if you're away from home and need to check something out. I bought a previous edition and referred to it often when I was learning to crochet. They also make a DVD in case you need more visual teaching: http://www.leisurearts.com/customer_care/search/item_detail.asp?item_num=3915&page=1&rec_num=0&startRec=0&skill=KC&search=3915 Here's a Preview of that DVD: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LZPT49lYORU&feature=related Of course, there are sites on the net which you can refer to and even print and keep in your crochet tote. The one I like best is the Crochet Guild of America: http://www.crochet.org/ Look under resources. They even have instructions for lefties! :) There are lots of resources in YouTube.com. So far, this lady explains things very well, like you're in kindergarden! http://youtube.com/watch?v=hVBnFHGbeK4&feature=related Hope this helps!
