How do I stop my crochet shrinking?

I've heard that crochet shrinks when you wash it. Is there any way to stop it shrinking?

1. Cotton thread? It will stretch back out when you iron it. On doilies, etc. I use starch on them, and iron from the center, they stretch right back to the original size.
2. if you can try washing it in cold water and then dry it on low heat for about ten minutes and then let it air dry the rest of the way.
3. If you use poly yarn it won't. If cotton, just wash with cold water.
