Stitches

What can I use (that I could find around my house) to make knitting needles (or just to knit with)?

And I have lots and lots of junk around my house (skewers, chopsticks they give out in restaurants, duct tape, pins, etc.) but as I haven't had much knitting experience before, how can I actually turn one of these things (or something else, I really do have a lot of junk) into functional knitting needles? (I've tried skewers by themselves but they're too thin, and chopsticks don't have points but they seem promising.) Any ideas?

  1. Depends on the size of needles you're wanting. But here's some ideas: Toothpicks, Ink pens, Chopsticks, Pencils Just about anything semi-pointy would work. But a needle-sizer would be helpful if you need to do any gauging.
  2. [ k n i t t i n g n e e d l e s : d i y ]Materials: Wooden dowels of varying diameters Saw (optional) Pencil sharpener with two pencil diameters Fine grit sand paper Tack cloth Acrylic paint Carnauba wax (clear) Buttons Epoxy http://www.littlecabbage.com/diy/needles.html - 6k -
  3. chopsticks sound ok
  4. I'd just go buy some; they're cheap. The convenience of having a tool suited for the job often makes up for its cost.
  5. Chopsticks, but you would need more of a point at the ends, and they may end up splintering and creating a lot of problems with your yarn. Knitting needles are VERY inexpensive, I would highly suggest you purchase a set.
  6. I have heard you can use dowels, branches from trees(this takes a lot of work), and maybe if you use chop sticks you can sand some to make them in different sizes. You would need a needle guage to determine this. (Walmart for a dollar something) This would be handy if you want to make and sell them, different size needles to knit different size things. Here are three different website to get you started, good luck...
