How do I keep my male dog off of my female dog?
I have a male and a female puppy - both 12 weeks old. They were both spayed and neutered about a week ago. They even still have the cones on their heads to keep them from chewing their stitches. However, I think I've caught the male trying to mount her several times - I couldn't tell if they were just playing or not. Should this still be happening even though they've been fixed? Is there any way to keep him off of her, short of keeping them constantly separated?

- its ok. his sexual hormones are still telling him he needs it. it is not harmful. it will make your dogs happy.
- Probably aftershock, play, or simply affection. Dogs sometimes also do it for the heck of it.
- Puppies play mount. He should stop eventually, even though my neutered male will still mount my spayed female. Mounting shows dominance, so he may do it his entire life.
- It's not a sexual thing - it's a hierarchy thing - he's trying to claim dominance and establish a pecking order, this is fine and normal - don't worry about it.
- mounting is sometimes used to show dominance... even female dogs will do it... just correct him if you catch him doing it, but if they have been fixed i don't think you need to worry about puppies or keeping them constantly separated
- Theyve both been fixed so its fine - theyre probably just playing. I wouldnt be too concerned here.
- They are probaly just playing. Thank you for being a responsible pet owner and spaying and neutering. If he is mounting her just give a sharp clap or a loud noise when he does then tell him no. Or you can put him in the "sit" position. He will eventually learn not to mount her.
- a bat should do the trick.... JK It's normal, and its gona happen, and you won't have puppies
- Give him a piece of green shaggy fur to hump, he will have the time of his life :)
- its normal if you just spayed and nuetered them they still have sexual hormones. after the stiches are gone it is still normal because there either playing or just showing whos boss. i know alot about animals because i have had many experiences with mine.
- Holy crap, they were spayed/neutered at 11 weeks old????!!!!! Check out this link to the adverse reactions in dogs subjected to early speuter practices... http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html At 12 weeks old, they are not sexually mature, let alone active. They have no clue what the behavior indicates to people, or what happens with it in adult intact dogs. This is simply play and their way of asserting dominance over each other. It is natural play behavior, they are not "trying to breed" and there is no reason to keep them seperated and to keep him off her is a futile effort, since it is play behavior which comes naturally to them and is instinctive in all dogs, of every age. Hope this helps,
