What is an edge stitch in knitting, and how do I increase stitches?

I asked a question a few days ago about a pattern and the best answerer replied "...knit into the front and the back legs of the next stitch, work 12 more stitches in pattern, knit into the next stitch front and back (this is the simplest increase), and then work the next 12 stitches and knit front and back into the last stitch. You should now have 42 stitches." Now, does the edge stitch not count when casting on? I've always noticed that when turning my work after casting on, the first knit stitch does not want to transfer over. Also, what does "knit into the next stitch front and back" mean? Help! Thanks! I taught myself to knit, I have no grandparents and no one I know knits, nor do their grandmothers.

1. The edge stitch should be counted. Depending on the cast on version you use, the edge stitch may be tight for the first row. Check out lionbrand.com for their knitting instructions. They have some very good diagrams for how to increase, decrease, and every other type of stitch you may need. Also on youtube there are some knitting videos that may help.
2. These things are much less stress to learn when in company. Ask your grandma to teach you, or someone else's grandma. Is there a neighbour in your street who could help you out? A workmate? Failing that, do a google search for a knitting group in your town, or try meetup.com. Even a spinners and weavers group would have knowledgable people. If you just have a small question, take your knitting down to your local wool/craft shop and ask the shop assistants for help!
