what is the best cast on to use with a lengthwise knitted scarf?
knitting cast ons and bind offs that match for different uses I don't care to use the long-tail, with one length of yarn or two (to avoid running out of yarn). It doesn't have an edge I like, esp. with a garter-stitched lengthwise scarf, nor does it have the give.

- Most people knit looser than they cast on and bind off. When casting on for a lengthwise scarf, the most important thing to remember is to cast on very loosly. This will avoid the sides of your scarf from gathering in. Any cast on method that allows you to cast on loosly is a good one. I usually cast on with the long tail cast on. This is tricky for lengthwise scarfs though since you have to make sure you leave enough tail yarn for the cast on. The knitting cast on is probably the easiest to use, since you don't have to leave enough tail yarn.
