what comes after the cast on in knitting?

i can't figure what the next step is after doing the cast on. can anyone help?

  1. once you cast the stitches on, you start actually knitting.
  2. Turn the work, then place the needle through the first stitch, wrap the yarn around the needle and pull it through, then you slip the original stitch off. Work your way across the row until you finish. In this way you are moving all your old stitches off the first needle and onto the second needle and creating a new row. For the next row, turn the work and just slip the first stitch onto the free needle. This will tighten up your edges as you knit. Then put your needle into the second stitch, wrap the yarn around the needle and pull the yarn through the second stitch. Slip the original stitch off the first needle. Work this way until the piece is as long as you want it.
