In knitting is the cast on like the first "row"?
i know how to croshet, and i wanted to learn how to knit...what i dont understand is, is the "cast on" like the first row? or is it like something different? it would make this whole learning how thing a whole lot easier. oh and web sites would help, if their are any that help show you how. i have two books that are so confusing.

- Yes, a cast on is like your first row although it is very similar, it is a little tricky to learn at first. when i first started, my aunt cast on for me.
- Casting on is sometimes considered the first row and sometimes not, depending on the type of cast on used (most beginner knitting books and magazines such as Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting usually have descriptions of various ways to cast on). In my experience, most types of casting on are not considered the first row. If you are following a pattern, I have never seen a pattern where the cast on was considered row 1, so if the pattern does not specifically say to consider the cast on as row 1, I would assume that it is not.
