  1. I love to knit. Some times though, the people who write the instructions don't know english. It's their own language. A stitch marker is a little circle (most of the time plastic) that you use to mark a certain place. You can use any type of object that will stay put and you can transfer between needles. In a pinch, I lay a small peice of yarn, not colored, between the stitches, just remember to remove it later! I usually don't pay attention to marked points; sorry, can't help you there. Check out a online knitting magazine or web site, just google "knitting" or "knitting instructions"
  2. Hope the following will help you: You could use a pin as a "stitch marker". I assume you have an opening at the top of your hat, therefore, by securing the hat at four points with the pins the top of the hat will stay in place and then you will be able to sew it evenly. Please let me know if you still have questions.
  3. Basically, these are fancy instructions for sewing the top of the hat together in an X. IF you're very good at eyeballing things like this, skip the stitch markers -- even the improvised ones (mine are safety pins) -- pinch the thing in half one way and then the other, bringing the four center points into the middle and sew all four together at once. Then sew the 4 seams that radiate out from that center point. The pattern just tells you a good way to make sure all four seams are even in length if you're not so good at eyeballing it. If you do use something to mark the four points, pull them together and sew through all four at once. Then pull out the dsafety pins, or whatever you used, and sew the four seams that form the X.
  4. A stitch marker is something - usually a plastic split ring - that is used to mark stitches. The marker can be attached to a stitch itself, or it can be used right on the needle to mark between stitches. joining can be done by many methods - such as sewing it together, or knitting it together
