  1. Ask the manager of JoAnn's for pointers..
  2. craft or hobby store
  3. http://crochet.about.com/ I'd start with crochet, personally I think it's easier.
  4. Welcome to the knitting world. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun and make many friends. I knit since many years and love every minute doing it. It seems you're just starting. You can go to www.knitty.com they have many articles and a forum (knitting board) where you can ask all the questions you have and many members will give you advice. Or join a Yahoo! group. Just type "hand knitting" into the search box. Or make a google search "How to learn to knit". You will have no problems to find free patterns for a beginner. Just make another search typing "free hand knitting patterns" into the box and you will get many web sites where you can look for them. www.about.com is a great site too for a beginner and offers advice and patterns - both free. Good luck with your new hobby
  5. The site, http://www.funcrochet.com has free lessons, videos, and crochet instructions. It also has a free downloadable Ebook that has all of the basic crochet stitches. Once you learn the basic crochet stitches, you will enjoy downloading the many free patterns on the site as well.
  6. about.com Im not sure they are simple enough to teach someone who has never done it though.
  7. I love www.knittinghelp.com for instruction. It shows video on how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off as well as more intermediate procedures. Lion Brand yarn has a good website for patterns and instruction for both knitting and crocheting. However, it's not a video just still pictures. Try looking in the library for knitting or crochet books for children. I loved them when I was learnihuge pictures and simple instructions. Try Kid Knits! If your library doesn't have them, do an inter-library loan for free. Whatever you choose, don't buy novelty yarn like fun fur or fuzzy. It's hard to control for the new fiber artist. Use a smooth yarn, not too thin or thick and light in color. Go to a Michael's or Joann's or Hobby Lobby for the yarn and their advise at first. WalMart just doesn't staff their craft section well. Good Luck! Yarn is addictive.
  8. Go to www.lionbrandyarn.com They have tons of patterns for both knitting and crochet. There's also great "lessons" on both knitting and crochet. Very informative site. Happy knitting/crocheting.
