Question on knitting instructions?
I'm a beginner at knitting, and I'm a little confused about what the directions of a project are telling me to do. It says "(k4,k2 tog) to end." Does that mean I repeat (k4, k2 tog) until I reach the end of the row? Or do I just do it once? Please put the instructions into plain English for me. Thanks! Ok, let me share more of the instructions: Cast on 24 sts Row 1: (k4,k2 tog) to end. 16 sts If I repeated (k4,k2 tog) until the end, I wouldn't be left with 16 stitches, I would be left with 14. So I'm still confused. Any help?

- "k4,k2 to end" means you knit 4 stitches, then knit the next 2 stitches together and repeat that pattern until the end of the row. Hope that helps.
- Hi there, when instructions are in brackets in a pattern, that usually means right across the row. Just do exactly as the pattern says. It says to the end, right. Hope this helps. Maryanne
- if you knitted 4, knit 2 tog across the row you'd end up with 20 stitches, not 16. at the beg and end only, you'd have 22, so something is wrong. maybe a misprint. yes, as another person wrote, what's in parentheses is repeated.
- you just repeat it until you are done with the row
- If you knit 4 sts and knit 2 together 4 times across the 24 stitches , you will come out to 16 sts. (Knit 4 Knit 2 tog = 6 sts. 6*4=24) What are the directions for the next row? What is you project?
- When it is in brackets it normally means to keep doing it until you run out of stitches. But if you start with 24, you aren't going to end up with 16 sometimes it helps to draw it. So here are 24 stitches in groups of 6 (and they are in groups of 6 because the number of stitches in the brackets add up to 6) l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l so there's your 24 stitches. Now in each group of 6 you are going to knit 4 stitches and then stitch 5 and 6 are knit together. So in each group of 6 stitches, you are going to lose 1 stitch. Make sense? Like this: l l l l ll so each group of 6 turns into a group of 5 l l l l ll l l l l ll l l l l ll you ought to end up with 20 stitches. It is not unusual to see errors in patterns. Look at the next row. What does it say?
