Stitches

Does anyone know how to convert a hand knit pattern to a machine knitting pattern?

I have a standard and a bulky and would like to try some patterns for hand knitting but do not know how to convert these patterns.

  1. You'd probably have to use the bulky machine for hand knitting yarns and determine their gauge on the machine, then to pattern and work the stitches on the machine from the stitches/gauge of the pattern. Then you'd really follow the hand knitting pattern for shaping and increasing.
  2. there is a free downloadable program available on the net that can create knitting patterns - hand and machine based. It will not convert your pattern but may be able to let you design one very close to what you want. This software has the options of sweater / cardigans with different sleeve styles and lengths as well as different shoulder styles, hems, length, necklines, sizes etc. You could try designing a machine knitting pattern with this software with the style you want - but you would need to knit a test swatch with your machine and yarn to enter this info for the pattern to be for the correct size that you want If you think this may solve your problem - the program is at www.greatknitdesigns.com and is the 'sweaters' one. Hope this may help you with your problem.
  3. I have a standard and bulky machine. I can interchange my hand and bulky knitting. I use size US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles and worsted yarn at a guage of 5 sts and 6 rows to the inch. On the bulky I use Tension 8. You should make a swatch of both and compare. Adjust the machine tension as needed. I have been knitting for 70 years. Teresa
