How long do i have to keep my stitches covered up for?

I cut my index finger and my middle finger at work Thursday night right on the knuckles therefore i cant bend them at all!.... I got stitches on both cuts, but they didnt tell me how long i have to keep them covered up like how many days...etc., They said to wash them twice a day so i do that but today i just left them uncovered all day is that bad!? I know im supposed to keep them protected but does it matter if i just leave them uncovered until may 20th when i go to get the stitches taken out?

1. i had stitches on my chest and they said to keep it covered for the first 3 days or so and then let it air. but the dressing was pathetic and fell off the first day and so i covered it with bandaids until they ran out 2 days later. it healed up just fine. because its on your hands though i wouldn't know because there is much more risk of getting them dirty and getting an infection. i'd just call up the dr surgery and get someone to tell you.
