How to connect yarn to an existing knitting project?

Here's the situation: I'm knitting my very first scarf. Now because this is the very first thing I've knitted, I'm running out of yarn to finish my scarf. I could take the project apart and start fresh with the right amount I'm sure. It's just that, well I've already done that. Don't want to do it again :o( How do I connect more yarn to my little project?

  1. No need to rip it apart ... there are many project which require more than a skein of yarn and joining is easy. The pros tell you that you do this: At the end of a row (if possible, you have to weave in ends and don't want to mess up the middle of a big project), simply hold the old strand plus new strand together, knit/ purl a stitch with the two held together, then drop the old, take up the new and keep going. Voila! The reality is that I'm a bit paranoid, so even though I know I should trust The Wise Ones of Knitting and just weave those ends in a leave it, I just can't. So I tie the ends together loosely (ignore that and you might have trouble a row or two later on ... ) and then at the end of the project, tie just the teeensiest knot (ACK! That word makes real knitters cringe!) and then weave the ends in with a needle. Happy Knitting!
  2. the most invisible way to add yarn in is to split the threads at the end of each piece you are going to join. and mesh them all together, push the "v"s together like this < > , then twist the yarn till it twists itself up on itself, it should look like one piece of yarn.
  3. adding a strand of the new ball as in the first answer works well but on a scarf I add it in the middle of the piece so that the edges of the scarf still look neat
  4. The easiest way is to do a Russian Join. This works well with almost any type of yarn unless it is super bulky. http://www.geocities.com/mama_bear_007/Russian_Join.html http://www.knittinganyway.com/freethings/russianjoin.htm also there is a video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oCmosL-Ggc
