  1. A knit stitch looks like a v and a purl stitch looks like a flat u. http://www.knittinghelp.com/ when you knit, the rt needle is inserted into the top of the st on the left needle. when purling, you insert th rt needle under the st on the left needle. Hope these links help.
  2. time and practice will show you the difference. Put in the time to knit up a whole skein of yarn in several different formations of stitches just practicing, and then you will be able to see the differences at a glance. I ask my students to make a notebook. 3-ring binder. on a page, put the pattern you are knitting. like page 1 is cast on 10, knit every stitch for 10 rows page 2 is cast on 10 , purl every stitch for 10 rows page 3 is cast on 10, knit 1 row, purl 1 row for 10 rows. page 4 is cast on 10 knit 5 stitches, purl 5 stitches, for 10 rows. page 5 cast on 10 , knit 5 stitches, purl 5 stitches, row 2 purl 5 stitches, knit 5 stitches. these basics will tell you how the different stitches fit together. page 6 will be the start of ribbing, the knit 1 purl 1 across, Just keep practicing and if my notebook makes sense, make yourself one. My notebook has sample swatches of every pattern I have ever tried and there are a lot of them! It also contains the yarn I made the item out of and how it looked finished. This is about 50 years worth of knitting experience.
  3. Very simple knitting looks like the front of a sweater and purl looks like the inside. OK?
