Stitches

What does a little ribbon thing mean on knitting charts?

I am making a twisted Bavarian knitting hat. It's a bunch of cable all the way around. They look like the ribbon things you put on cars for breast cancer or something.

  1. Each square in a knitting chart represents a stitch. Your chart should come with a glossary that indicates what each symbol means. For example a dot in one of the squares may mean to purl. So when knitting with the chart you would purl the stitch that represents that square. Hope your chart came with a glossary cause if it didn't I can't help you there.
  2. Hi, in the one pattern* that I have that uses that symbol the symbol represents a stitch that you would knit through the back loop to create a twisted stitch. This may not be true for all patterns using this symbol. But it does make a lot of sense that it would mean to twist the stitch. * the pattern that I'm referring to is the Koolhaas hat from the Interweave Knits Holiday 2007 issue.
