  1. Many craft stores sell kits with instruction on how to knit, some yarn and a set of knitting needles. Michaels, Wal-Mart and Joann's carry them or you can buy them from websites such as www.lionbrand.com. There is a very good website called knittinghelp.com that has short videos you can replay that show the basics of many different knitting stitches. Knitting takes some patience to get going but it is a very enjoyable pasttime. I've been knitting for more than 30 years. You might want to also check out The Knitting Guild of America www.tkga.com
  2. Check out Crafttown.com, knit patterns central.com and knitting instructions for information on learning to knit. In regard to the supplies Walmart is discontinuing their craft section. Joann has a good site and I would suggest that you look through the site and pick out a pair of needles either a size 6 or 8 as that is the ones that are most usually used. You can get larger needles but they are not used as much and I mentioned that as you wanted to get what would be your lowest in cost. They also have Clark and Coats yarn for about $2.00. You can find all of these on line and then either purchase them on line or if there is a store near you you can pick it up there. Also Michael's has a good supply of the above mentioned supplies. The only reason I mention Joann is that it is the closest to me.
