Attending Chinese traditional wedding banquet....Appropriate gown?
It's for my best friend's wedding in September. It will be a big extravagant traditional Chinese wedding and the banquet will be in a high-class setting after 6:30 p.m. I'm ordering my dresses all "custom-made." I'm not one of her bridesmaids cuz I'm already married with kids, but, as her best friend, the elders asked me to do the honorable "hair-combing-blessing" ceremony the night before the wedding (we don't do Bachelorette parties in Chinese customs). Here are the Chinese Qi Pao (or Cheongsam) I have narrowed down to: http://www.eaststore.com/catalog/product_495_Embroidery_Dancing_Phoenix_Silk_Cheongsam_cat_2.html Actually Navy/Fuschia, not Dark Red as it looks in pic: http://www.eaststore.com/catalog/product_606_Mystical_Velvet_Dress_cat_2.html http://www.eaststore.com/catalog/product_452_Junoesque_Orchid_Embroidery_Cheongsam_cat_2.html http://www.eaststore.com/catalog/product_337_Feminine_Floral_Embroidery_Cheongsam_cat_2.html Which one is too gawdy? I want it to be as traditional as possible but I'm aiming for simple elegance.

- I would steer clear of the first one. Phoenix/Dragon are usually representative of the Bride and Groom. The second one is a little overdone for me - the last 2 are simple and beautiful - either would be appropriate. You should feel very honoured that you get to be involved in these wonderful ceremonies!! Congratulations!
- The third one is prettiest to me without being gawdy, but I'm not sure which is most appropriate.
- I think the third one is nice, classy, simple and elegant and at the same tiem Ggdd draw too much attentionf rom the bride
- I think the second one or the fourth one is beautiful and suitable for a wedding...it exudes quiet elegance. Not to mention you might be able to wear it again for another formal occasion. I find #1 and #3 a little loud and distracting....especially if the bride will have the traditional red cheongsam, you don't want to steal her thunder.
- I think they are lovely dresses, however if you are asking which ones are too gawdy I would suggest the 2nd and 3rd (due to the detail in the 2nd and the colour of the 3rd). I really like 1 and 4, however if it was up to me I would chose 4 because I think the flower design is just so feminine and elegant.
- I'd say definitely go for #2. Don't wear anything with a dragon (symbolizes the groom) or phoenix (symbolizes the bride) as that may be seen as "competing" if this is a very traditional affair. Also, I'd stay away from the bright green dress and aqua dress. Choose conservative colors. I think it's great that you're wearing a Qi Pao!
- Look for something red (but not too red, because that's the bride's color) because red has a lot of significance with luck. I like the red and black one.
