Do you stitch straight onto the item you want the design on with an embroidery machine?

When using an embroidery machine, do you stitch the design straight onto the shirt or whatever you want it on or do you stitch it onto fabric and then iron or sow it onto the clothes?

1. you will apply a hoot to keep the area you want to embroider on stiff and still while the machine does the work but the embroidery is applied directly to the fabric. No need to iron on.
2. Actually, you can do it either way. If you want to embroider on a separate fabric you use something very sheer as the base so it doesn't show and use special wash-away stabilizer. Good luck!
