How do you crochet a rectangular blanket rather than a square?

Hi I know how to crochet the basic square, but I don't know how to make the length longer (as in a rectangle) and i really would like to know because i need to make a blanket for my friend and he's really tall so i feel that a rectangle blanket would fit him better than a large square. Simple instructions would be very much appreciated! Thank you if you are able to help, and the sooner the better!

  1. being as you know how to do squares, I suggest you crochet a bunch of 1'x1' squares then stitch them together with a needle big enough for the yarn you are using into a long rectangle shape. My mom used to make afghans....I'm not sure if she used a needle and yarn to join the squares or just her crochet hook and the yarn...
  2. I made a blanket when I first learned to crochet. I only knew how to do granny squares, so it was one giant granny square. At both ends, however, I added a few rows going back and forth instead of all the way around. My mom loved it.
