Stitches

Knit: Is there an easy way to calculate how to decrease stitches?

In the written pattern I have 89 stitches and I'm supposed to decrease 21 stitches evenly across and end up with 68. (I'm supposed to knit two together as my decrease stitch). My question is "what is your way to calculate when to do a decrease stitch?" Thanks

  1. Each decrease uses 2 sts so 21 X 2 uses 42 sts. That leaves 47 sts to divide equally around those decreases. You will need 22 groups of stitches around the decreases so 47 divided by 22 = 2 with 3 remaining. I would add 2 of the remainder at the beginning and 1 of the remainder at the end of the row. The row would then read K4 *K2tog, K2 repeat from * to last 5 sts K2tog,K3
  2. One way is to divide the number of stitches on the needle by the number of decreases: 89 / 21 = 4 r5. The stitches will be divided into 21 groups of 4 stitches each with 5 stitches remaining to be divided between the ends of the row. Since you don't want the last 2 stitches to be decrease stitches, either split the remaining 5 as 1 extra at the beginning and 4 at the end or 2 extra at the beginning and 3 at the end. So: K3, *k2tog, k2, repeat from * to the last 4 stitches, k4 Or: K4, *k2tog, k2, repeat from * to the last 3 stitches, k3 Either way, the decrease stitches are divided evenly across the row.
