  1. First of all if you have access to a local library, GO! It will save you a butt-load of money checking out books instead of paying for them. I just recently taught myself how to knit. One book that helped is a 1981 book! Go figure! It's entitled: Step by step to better knitting & crochet by ARCO Publishing, INC. New York. Library number for it would be: 746.43 STE. I am actually going to buy it from EBAY because it did teach me so many techniques. Another book I do actually own and is worth the amount I paid is: The Crochet Stitch Bible by Betty Barnden. It has many types of stitches and tells you how to do different techniques. I would also look on Youtube.com, because I surprisingly taught myself to crochet and knit from there!
  2. Start at your public library. Get at least 3 books on beginning crochet. One should have good illustrations, one should have detailed explanations, and on should be from the children's department. At least one of them should be helpful. Once you find one that works for you, go to www.bookfinder4u.com and find a copy to buy.
  3. You tube videos are very good
  4. As an Australian, you probably should be looking for books and other how-to sources that use Australian terminology. Local craft shops that sell yarn likely have books you could look through to see if any appeal to you. Your public library may (or may not) have a selection of how-to books you could try out, or they may be able to get books for you on interlibrary loan (although usually you need to know the names and authors of the books you want for interlibrary loan). One source you might want to familiarize yourself with is Crochet Australia, a mail-order site that sells how-to books as well as supplies: http://www.crochetaustralia.com.au/ . At the lease, if you're going to follow up on book suggestions from Americans, you'll need "The Basics" from Crochet Australia, which includes hook, yarn, and terminology conversions: http://www.crochetaustralia.com.au/webcontent3.htm . The site also includes a Learning Center with basic instructions on how to do the stitches: http://www.crochetaustralia.com.au/webcontent2.htm . Good luck with finding resources that will help you get into and be successful with crochet. I hope you learn to love it as much as I do.
