What type of knitting equipment does a novice knitter need to have?

I'm a novice knitter and I've been knitting for about 1 and a half years. What basic equipment should i have by now? I know i can't get everything at once, but i want to know what i have and what i should put on top of my wish list. Thanks for answering! Argh! That's no what i meant! I meant stuff like cable needles and circular needles and that! And please, no stupid answers, and can someone who actually KNITS answer my question?

  4. It is best to buy the equipment you need as you need it. For example If you decide to knit an item that needs a circular needle just buy that 1 size. Buying a whole set may be cheaper per needle but most of them you will never use. Stitch holders are always useful and they do not come in different sizes so you can use them for any project. I prefer the type that are like a big safety pin. They stay securely shut and do not hook on your knitting. A number of items are pointless. I saw a packet of stitch markers in a shop the other day costing £2.38. You do not need these. If you wish to mark a stitch in your knitting a safety pin does the job. If you want to mark a stitch on your needle then use make a slip knot in a piece of contrast yarn. This is free and better than these plastic rings which get in the way as you knit and can make you knit loose stitches as you cannot slide the stitches evenly across the needle.
  5. mom says to pick up stuff as you need it or go to thrift shops yard sales or the like and get it there cheap the old ones die and the family doesn't want the stuff so its cheap
  6. You'll love knitting! When I first started off, I bought a book of many different types of stitches, a set of needles (somewhere between 8-10 so you can use it to make a variety of items), cables, tapestry needle, stitch holders (paper clips or plastic safety pins can work too), joined an online community like Ravelry.com and Craftsy.com and of course yarn lol. Circular needles and double pointed needles are also good to have later on. I have a free scarf pattern you can try to get started (just yarn and needles needed): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hot-red-ribbed-scarf Also free feel to check out my other items: http://www.craftsy.com/craftsyer/30540 http://www.ravelry.com/designers/mau-works
  7. Re-moveable stitch markers Needle gauge tape measure cable needles (or double pointed needles. I hate cable needles, personally) stitch holders (or scrap yarn. Cheaper and flexible) small scissors a project bag darning/wools. Many of them. Lots. Loads. Heaps! needle roll/holder for needle storage Circular needles in your favorite sizes with 16", 24" and 29" cables Double pointed needles in your favorite sizes (or circular needles with 40" cable so you can use the magic loop method) little calculator for making modifications to patterns. In a perfect world, you could get a ball winder and swift too but those are pretty pricy. Everything else I listed can be bought for under $10 each.
