How do you wash cross stitch embroidery?

I bought a kit with a pattern printed on it while on vacation, but I don't know how to wash the ink off when I'm finished. Washing it with water makes the ink smudge, but there are some very large numbers and arrows all over the piece that I need to get rid of. Most people just bring it back to the shop to get it washed, but now I've left the country and I don't know what they use to wash it with.
