  1. It depends on the wool and the tension of your knitting. Cast on a square of 30 stitches and knit a square and count the number of stitches per inch/centimetre and how many rows for the length.
  2. I have made two projects on size 50 needles, neither as large as the one you want to make. Project No. 1 was a baby blanket that used 4 strands of knitting worsted yarn held together and a stitch pattern that created a thick fabric. It was about 1/4 the size of the project you want to do. It took about 2 pounds of acrylic yarn in knitting worsted size. The gauge I got was about 4 stitches = 4", so casting on 72 stitches would produce a piece 72" or 6 feet wide. Project No. 2 was a baby blanket that used 4 strands of Lion Brand Homespun held together. The stitch pattern was plain stockinette and the resulting blanket was about 40" by 40". It took 5 skeins of LB Homespun to make the blanket and fringe. Again, the stitch gauge was about 4 stitches = 4". Based on my experience, you would need about 8 pounds (8 one-pound balls) of acrylic worsted-weight yarn. Or you would need about 20 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun to match the size using stockinette stitch and maybe a bit more of the Homespun for garter stitch. If you're going to use a more complex stitch pattern, it will take more yarn. Considering the length of the needles vs the width you want to knit, you might want to make the blanket in strips and sew or crochet them together. Here's a Lion Brand pattern for Speed Stix using an interesting mixture of yarns: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/50573.html?noImages=0 . Here's one using only homespun that's about 1/3 the size you want: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60045A.html?noImages=0 . This one is about 3/5 the size you want and uses worsted-weight acrylic together with Fun Fur eyelash yarn: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60252.html?noImages= . This one is about 1/3 the size you want, has an interesting pattern, and was worked with 2 strands of Thick 'n' Quick, but could be worked with 4 strands of worsted weight: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60251.html?noImages=
