How many stitches do I need when knitting a hat?

I am knitting a hat with about 12 mm needles and i need to know how many stitches to put on it.... Please reply ASAP. I need to finish this hat by June 8th 2011. Thank You

1. Stitch a 4" by 4" square and see how many stitches are in each inch. Once you get that number, multiply it by the amount of inches needed to go around the head (normally about 21"~22"). That is your starting round.
