is there any kind of knitting machine I can program directly from my computer?
Almost all of the ones I've researched (that don't cost thousands of dollars), require you to manipulate the needles by hand, even if you have software that generates a pattern. I'm interested in creating an art project that takes user input from a laptop and generates knitting patterns that can be sent directly to, and created by the machine. Ideally I could step away and just have it run in a gallery like setting without having to adjust the needles for each row, and it could make simple patterns

- Knitting machines which needed an operator to manipulate each row disappeared years ago. Electronic machines or older punch card machines have a patterning system which selects the needles and you can purchase a motor to push the carriage to and fro. I'm not clear what exactly you want to do. I am just pointing out that your knitting machine knowledge is incomplete. Google in "silver reed electronic knitting machine" for details of the latest machines.
