Stitches

how do you keep your stitches clean after the birth if you dont have a bathtub?

since i had my daughter ive moved to a new house and we have a built in shower no bath, i swore by baths all the time after the birth to soak them because i had a lot of stitches and that was the only thing that helped the pain and heal them quicker. im nearly 8 weeks pregnant with my second and worried about how ill do it this time round if i need stitches again, how did you mums do it?? thanks everyone ill definately look into that, i wasnt provided with anything after having my daughter i had terrible care at that hospital though.

  1. You could get one of these...http://www.amazon.com/Duro-Med-Portable-Bidet-Sitz-Bath/dp/B000FHFP76/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292618251&sr=8-1 They are used in hospitals. I had a cesarean so I really don't know.
  2. If you ask the nurses, they will give you a squirt bottle to use after you urinate. You can use it more often if you need to. Also, you can purchase a portable Sitz Bath, which will soothe your stitches. Ask the hospital if they have permanently installed Sitz Bath. If they do, use it as much as possible while you are in the hospital. Good luck with your new baby!
  3. I was also in the same situation, I just took showers and soaked pads in witch hazel, I was looking for some kind of bucket I could have used but never found one! x
  4. If your stitches are down there, the hospital usually provdes you with a script for/ or just gives you a sitz bath. Which is medicated powder that you mix with warm water and squeeze down there to help with the healing and pain for sutures.
  5. They didn't give you a magic water bottle in the hospital? Goto a best supply store, but a n empty hair coloring bottle, and use that......
  6. The squirt bottle thing works great (not a spray bottle, but one that has a top like a dish washing soap container) - and what I found SO nice - though it might sound odd, is to get some of those ultra absorbent thin pads with a thin weave top (so it doesn't stick to you - always is the brand I used), and to put some water on them (not enough to fill or soak them, but enough to get them wet inside) and then freeze them. Leave them open instead of folded while in the freezer and honestly, the cold feels SO nice, the water cleans it and then you toss the thing away. These things helps so much for me - I was given them at the hospital where I had my son and continued to do it when I went home for about a week. Each time I'd use a new one, I swear I sounded like an addict or something because I'd say "Ohhhh that's the stuff." and give a thankful sigh! I know it sounds weird but honestly - they were awesome. The cold helps the swelling, numbs things a bit, and it kept things clean - just don't fill them with water or you'll be sitting on a soggy pad!
  7. After my labour I had just a few stitches. The nurses gave me a squirt bottle to fill with water (I'm sure you could find one somewhere if they can't provide it) so that you can clean yourself off thoroughly after using the bathroom with no painful wiping. They also sent me home with witch hazel pads, which are a wonderful relief. You can also find these in most chemists if you look really hard. Good luck.
  8. my nurse gave me a little squirt bottle to use when I peed. You squirt water on yourself with that. I never got any stitches but I still used it for cleaning purposes after I had my kids
  9. use neat lavender oil, its antibacterial and speeds healing and prevents scar tissue. just wash gently with the shower.
  10. I lived in a cabin with NO bathroom -- only an out house, when I gave birth to my first two kids. So my husband got me a large basin, and I sat in that to soak my stitches. Just like those old time pictures of moms giving kids a bath in a basin. I had spray bottles, but nothing like a real soak. I can't believe U built a new house without a bath tub. They are great to lay in and 'float' the baby on your tummy. Oh well, if U get a large basin it will serve two purposes -- U and the baby can both use it for bathing. Have fun.
  11. I just got the basin out my sink, filled it with water, then sat in it for a while.
