How do i know how big my knitting needles are?

I have a whole bunch of circulaur knitting needles and they are all in diffrent sizes and they don't tell me how big they are. how do i find out if they are 4mm or 5mm???? I don't want to have to buy new needles every time i go to make a project!!!!

1. everyone I have ever bought has the number somewhere on them, it may be very small.
2. I have the same problem. I have a load which should have the size printed on the flat bit where the cord joins the needle. I solved this problem by buying a gauge (available in all knitting yarn shops), which gives cm or American or old English sizes.
