Can I mix two knitting patterns together?

I am an advanced beginner knitter (been knitting for about 2 years, but still limited to hats, scarves, the occasional shrug) and I would really like to knit my first sweater. My question is- can I take a nice simple easy sweater pattern and then include a charted design from another pattern without it turning out badly? Thanks for the help! Thanks to everyone so far- I'm adding the link to the charted design I'd like to use (the birds), and then I'd like to just look for a generic sweater pattern to use it on. http://rarerborealis.com/wordpressblog/2010/04/09/free-pattern-friday-springtime-generosity/

  1. It depends on the pattern. A cable pattern, for example, acts like a rib and pulls in so if you used a plain stocking stitch pattern the sweater would come out too small. Compare the tension of your charted pattern to the simple one. If they are the same you can swop. If there is just a slight difference you can probably correct it by using a size larger or smaller needles.
  2. If it is an actual chart like a graph with the symbols on it you should have no problem. If it is a charted cable that could pose a problem not knowing how much it will pull on the sides. If I were able to see them I could give you a better answer. Is it possible for you to let me know where I could see the charted one? Please email me the information. EDIT ….That graph is what I hoped it would be. Watch the pattern as the graph they used was not the normal 10 it is 8X8. It looks like all of the birds are the same, you don’t have to delete any block, just place the birds where you want them to go. It will not turn out badly as they don't ask for additional stitches. If you need help with any part of merging them email me.
  3. I would call your art a sampler , I don't see why not creativity is yours and making this piece could be a unique way of showing off your new design , this is how Designers become famous ,use your mind and ideas who cares about the rest . http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:_am8r1ygYyR_gM:http://birds-n-yarn.com/images/Sampler%20Sweater%20Sarah%20James.jpg&t=1
