Stitches

What are some good crochet stitches for the middle of a baby blanket?

I'm using single crochet stitches, half double crochet stitches, and the spike stitch for the first 8 rows of each side of the blanket. I need a good stitch or two for the middle of the blanket (this will be the majority of the blanket). It's a blanket for a baby boy. I really like the popcorn stitch, but mine never looks the way it's supposed to. Any ideas? Thanks!
