Help with crochet thread, what is thickest?

I make little doll shoes and have recently found that the string like crochet thread is better than wool. I have no idea what to buy as someone gave me the ball I have. It is like string so not fine like some crochet balls I have seen. Can anyone clarify this for me. Any help would be marvelous, thanks
