How many stitches should I use for knitting a fairly thick scarf with 6 1/2 mm needles?
Just give me a rough idea? The wool I'm using is of average thickness. I want it to be thick enough to be a decent winter scarf without being smothering. Thanks!

- The number of stitches won't affect the thickness of your scarf, it will only change the dimensions of the scarf (length and width). If you want to knit a thick scarf with worsted weight yarn I'd suggest going down a few needle sizes. The needles you are using are size US 10 1/2 which would make an airy light scarf, I'd suggest using size US 6 (4 mm) or size 7 (4 1/2 mm). Hope this helps!
- To make a thick scarf you need thick yarn. The number of stitches will not make it thicker unless you knit it twice as wide as you want and then sew the long edges together to make a tube. You can use your yarn double. That would make it thicker. To work out how many stitches you need .Cast on about 16 stitches and knit a piece 2-3 inches long. Measure how many stitches there are per inch. Say there are 4. If you want your scarf 6 inches wide. Then cast on 4X6=24 stitches. To get a neat edge slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch on every row. As well as giving a neat edge it also will not curl.
