Daycare parents get mad over one scratch but?

these same parents will have their babies come to daycare with black eyes, bruises, burns, stitches, broken arms/legs, deep scratches, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. I don't understand this but these parents will get mad if the child come home with a tiny scratch that you can hardly see. I never had a child in my room except one that had a broken leg, but others have had these problems, and mostly all of these kids are under the age of 18 months. Well this is the age I'm around doing the day, so I see it more in them. Has any other daycare worker notice this?

  1. I don't work in Daycare, but my mom is in the school system. That sounds VERY strange, and to be honest I would call DSS. It sounds like they're beating their children or are very neglectful. Some parents (when they're neglectful or beat their children) notice this instantly because they didn't cause it. Going off on someone else makes them feel better about when they do it because they can say "hey, I stopped them from doing it to you didn't I". I know it sounds horrible but I've heard of it happening from my mom and from seeing it when hanging out in my mom's class helping her.
  2. Wow. If kids were coming in like that to any day care I worked in then I would be talking to someone. Parents like knowing what's going on is all. I'm sure they are witnessing all the other bumps and bruises so they know where they've come from. However if they come home from day care with a new marking and there isn't an explanation for it then it can lead to upset parents.
  3. Its hard when your child hurts themself at home and you were supervising. But its worse for lots of parents when it happens somewhere else. It just makes you doubt your judgement on the person watching your child. I remember my aunt being a little snappy with me once when I was watching her sons at my house and the oldest one got hurt. She wasnt really mean just stressed and scared. I had been watching them for years and never had one problem. Well that day we were outside playing in the driveway and he fell off the skateboard and broke his arm. I loaded them in the car and went to the ER right away the only thing I did first was grab my keys and wallet. I called her from the ER and she got back into town later as we got home because she was pretty far. But everything was fine. She apolgized later Just shrug it off.
  4. Wow. First things first, I would be documenting the marks on each child and how often they are coming in with them. As a childcare provider, it IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to report any suspicion of child abuse. Even if it turns out not true. As far as the parents getting "mad if the child come home with a tiny scratch that you can hardly see": I think most parents just get mad because they weren't there to see it themselves and possibly prevent it. You have to realize that a parent drops their child/ren off at daycare usually only think of their child as being the one that is being watched and taken care of the best. They don't realize that there are 15-19 other children that have 2 and MAYBE 3 teachers to watch after allof them. I used to work in the 1 yr old classroom and ratio was 1 teacher to 8 kids, Tell me how Myself and 1 other teacher can keep 16 kids off of eachother at the same time? It's impossible, which is why I quit...So many parents got mad because their children went home with bites and scratches. But when I only have 1 other teacher with me with 16 kids, well, I know you get the picture..So to answer your question, YES, I do notice it. But please keep an eye on the children who come into the daycare with bruises. Even if you are wrong about a suspicion, it's not a bad thing to potentially stop child abuse.
