Stitches

Is there a crochet stitch that stretches?

I have patterns for crochet hats - but they don't stretch to fit different people very well - like a knit hat would. The patterns I have all use single and double crochet stitches in rounds. Is there a pattern or stitch that has some give to it when done? Thanks!

  1. You could try working it sideways with single crochet and work in the back loop only. You will need to work with short rows to get the correct shape at the top. This will give it lots of stretch. This is how I have always worked crochet hats as they fit better and it's easier to make it bigger or smaller to fit any size head. Found some patterns here http://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/Crochet/Projects/Accessories/WM0305+Crocheted+Vision+Hat.htm http://fabricfolliestwo.wordpress.com/my-free-crochet-patterns/easy-crocheted-hat/ http://yeenmachine.blogspot.com/2008/10/winter-green-hat.html
  2. You might try a crochet rib. It doesn't stretch much, but a little bit. To create rib stitch, crochet single crochet stitches on the first row. Turn your work and make one chain stitch. On this row, and all the next rows, you will make single crochet stitches in the back only of each stitch. This could probably be used as the section that surrounds your forehead but not the crown because there is no decrease to shape it to your head.
