How to crochet a capped sleeve or crochet the shape of an eye?

I am trying to develop a pattern for very short sleeve on a sweater. I have tried a half-circle but it was to long at the top. I would like it to be in the shape of an eye. If you can help me find a tutorial or a hint on how to start it. I would like it to be all single crochet as that is the design of the rest of the pattern.

  1. SHAPE OF AN EYE: Start by chaining as many chainss as you'd like to get the correct width. Do 2 sc in 2nd chain from hook. Now, you will work evenly along (using only ONE LOOP of chain row), graduating from sc, then hdc, then dc, then trc to center of chain row. Next you will work your way back down the other half (just the opposite). For example: If I chained 22, this would be a pattern that I'd use for a perfect eye. Ch 22, (working in one loop only of chain row) sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 chs, hdc in next 3 chs, dc in next 3 chs, trc in next 3 chs, dc in next 3 chs, hdc in next 3 chs, sc next 2 chains, 3sc in last chain. (Working on back side of chain row and one loop only) sc in next 2 chs, hdc next 3 chains, dc in next 3 chains, trc in next 3 chains, dc in next 3 chains, hdc in next 3 chains, sc in next 2 chains, 2sc in end ch. Join with first sc with sl st. Finish off and weave in ends.(44 sts) Pattern copyrighted by Beverly L Elrod on July 25, 2010 (just for you) Feel free to use it, but you'll need to chain according to how wide you want the 'eye' to be and then evenly crochet the other stitches across and around. For the capped sleeves, you might use this pattern by evenly spacing 21 sc at top of sleeve hole. Ch 1, turn, sc in same st and next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts, trc in next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts. Finish off and weave in ends. Work the same on the 2nd sleeve. For a fuller cap, you might want to place two stitches in each st. For example: in stead of "hdc in next 3 sts", you'd do "2hdc in next 3 sts".
  2. The answer above is originally the way I would suggest but since you want it in single crochet you can decrease over the first two stitches and last two stitches when you want to round the sleeve off.
