- You didn't say what gauge you're looking for, what type machine you're looking for, whether you need a ribber, or whether you want one close enough you can take delivery in person. If I were going to look for a Brother knitting machine, first, I'd have a gauge in mind. Second, I'd have in mind whether I wanted an electronic machine or a punch-card machine. Third, I'd have in mind whether I wanted the ribber with it or not. Then I'd check Craig's List for my area (I bought my two most recent knitting machines from ads on Craig's List--and took delivery in person). If no machine that fit my need turned up on Craig's List, I'd call the contact person in the knitting club closest to me (which is 125 miles away) and ask if they'd inquire of the membership if anyone wants to sell a Brother machine of x gauge with/without the ribber, for as much as $y, depending on the condition. OR I'd look to one of the professional online sellers such as Peter Smith: http://www.petersmithtrading.com/ . After that, I'd try a search on eBay: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=brother+knitting+machine&_sacat=See-All-Categories If you do buy a machine on eBay, take delivery in person if you can. Otherwise, insist that the machine be professionally packed for shipping, and don't take "original packaging" as adequate. It isn't. Make sure it is insured and look at the machine when it's delivered before you sign off on it.
- Have you considered checking the firms that sell them? Sometimes they are turned in for repairs and then go and buy one that is newer and they have them in stock for sale. Check it out as you may be able to get a good deal and maybe talk them into dropping the price even further.
- I just bought my used Brother 930 machine from a member on one of my knitting groups on Yahoo. There are also several machine knitting groups on Yahoo and they sell their used machines quite often to other members. Look through the list of groups and find one or two and sign up. Then just ask if anyone has one for sale. You will probably get several offers. I know the Bond machines are pretty good too so if you can't find a Brother, look into a Bond.
