does anyone know what the copy rite laws are for using cross stitch patterns for profit?
I am starting a business selling handmade cross stitch and knitted items. I need to know what the laws are concerning using someone else's patterns to make them and selling on for profit. Can I adapt patterns to make them my own or does it need to be completely individual?

- Any time you use somebody else's idea, pattern, etc. you must get consent, preferably written, in order to make profit off of it. Otherwise, it will be considered stealing and you will have to pay back anything you made off of it and possible more.
- Just a little advice from an old cross stitcher. It takes way too long to make a cross stitch picture, and then to try to sell it for profit? I think it may be easier to try regular embroidery, maybe on pillow cases. People love those, but I think most people have forgotten about those. You can get the iron on transfers from Walmart and those are made to make multiples from.
