How do I follow these knitting instructions?

I am confused about what these knitting instructions mean. I am trying to knit a child's cardigan. The instructions say "With main color, cast on 34 stitches. Knit 2 for left front, PM, purl 7 for sleeve, PM, purl 16 for back, PM, purl 7 for other sleeve, PM, purl 2 for right front. Knit next row. Continue working in stockinette, increasing by knitting in front and back in the first and last stitch of every right side row 6 times and at the same time begin shaping as follows: KFB before and after each marker on every right side row 16 times. Remove markers and work back and forth until piece measures 6 inches from beginning." I know how to knit and purl and I know how to use place markers, I am just confused about how they want me to increase the stitches. Am I suppose to make 16 stiches out of 1? Or KFB one time in each place in each row or 16 rows? I have the same question about the 6 times too. Thank you in advance.

  1. I would have to see the pattern itself to be able to answer you. It does sound very strange that it does not tell you anything about what to do with the 34 stitches. Also what does PM stand for. Maybe it explains in the pattern what that is. It sounds as if they want you to knit it all in one. Sorry.
  2. First lets do the 6 times. Increase in the first and last stitch of every right side row 6 times. Means 6 right side rows. i.e Assuming 1st row is the right side Increase on rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 Now the 16 times. At the same time increase each side of the markers on 16 right side rows.i.e. rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, and 31 I hope this makes sense. It's easier to do than explain it.
  3. this appears to be a pattern made in 1 piece with no seaming. i think the PM is purl make on end of row. now put your thinking cap on and try to figure out what they want you to do, you are a smart girl.
  4. This pattern is obviously knitted from the neck down with no seams. Cast on 34 sts then Place Markers in the first row. Increase by knitting into the front of the stitch and then before you remove it from the needle knit into the back of the same stitch (KFB). Remove both stitches and you have just increased one stitch into two. The placing of the increases is as follows: once in the FIRST stitch, one stitch BEFORE and one stitch AFTER each marker and ONCE in the last stitch OF EACH KNIT ROW. Repeat the increases at the beginning, end AND at the markers 6 times on the knit rows (12 rows) then at the markers ONLY for another 10 times times (32 rows) This should increase the number of stitches by 10 stitches each increase row for the first 12 rows, then by 8 stitches after that. What you are doing is casting on the neck of the cardigan. The increase at the front and back gives the neck shaping and the increases at the markers is shaping the raglan sleeves. The markers indicate where the seams would be if you knitted in the normal way. Good luck.
