Stitches

How do you do the knit stitch in knitting?

I know how to cast on and everything but whenever i make the stitches with the right needle theres this string in between the two needles and i dont know if its supposed to be there? do u know some links or some instructions with an easy way to understand? ive tried a bunch of things but i always get the same result. or... how do i stop the little piece of string from being in between the needles???

  1. It's there because of how you cast on. It will disappear into the tail after you've finished the first row. Here's some knitting lessons from Lion Brand. http://learntoknit.lionbrand.com/?learnToKnit=1
  2. The little piece of yarn should always be there...but it should look different. I think you are knitting way too loosely, and the look of it is freaking you out. 3. Without seeing it, I really can't tell what you mean. There has to be a "string" between the needles -- that's just how it works. Where did you learn to knit? Surely they would have shown you how to do it properly. I guess you really don't know "how to cast on and everything" if you are having a problem. If you used the improper method of casting on (and the backward "e" is not really a good one), then you will have problems. The long-tail cast-on will give you good results. It may also be that you are not using enough tension on your yarn. Again, without seeing what you are talking about, it is hard to know what to do to correct it. There are tons of sites with knitting on them, and some of them are a whole lot better than others. Of course, you already know about http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on and have followed those directions, so you should not have any problem at all, and there are a few others. Don't depend on Yootoob, since some of them are quite wrong. And of course, you have already gone to your LYS and got the help, because that is what they are for. You can always go back to your instructor and ask them as well. Best to show us a pic so we know what you mean.
  4. I do wish you allowed mail so I could have been assured you got this information. In the link the first set of drawings you will see there is a line of yarn going from one row to another . This "\/" will indicate one row going up and on the other side also going up and this "_" will be the yarn I mentioned. So it would look like this \/_\/_\/_\/_\/_\/_\/. If that is what your questioning, it is the yarn that is making the next \/ for you. So it will always be there. However if that is not it can you email me a picture of it so I can get a better idea of what is going on and help you with it? http://www.knitting.co.nz/site/page_affix/toaffix_learntoknit6/
