Crocheting: What is the best stitch to work with for clothing?

I'm looking to crochet a summer dress but don't want something with a bunch of holes in it either, though I want to crochet it. Any suggestions on the best stitch I should use while making this dress? Thanks a bunch fellow craft junkies!
