1. if you do it right the first time, you wont have to go back and do it again
2. In sewing it means, if you have a small hole in something, fix it before it gets bigger. This same analogy could be carried over to most of life's troubles. If something starts to go wrong, "Nip it in the bud" before it gets worse.
