What are the best knitting or crochet stitches for unusual yarns?

I bought a bulky (works on size 10.5 American needle) black boucle yarn with a bit of white and a thread of mylar for sparkle. What is the best knitting or crochet stitch to show off the yarn? And I have a 1/2 inch wide multicolor ribbon yarn. How do I show off the yarn/colors? Long stitches seem to be my only choice, so far. Are there others?

1. Knitting- maybe a garter stitch? (knit every row) Im not sure about crochet stitches though as i am not sure what the yarn looks like..

3. You have a couple of choices - a simple garter stitch, knit every row, but use larger needles and it will come out lacey. Or do a simple lace pattern with some yo's, ssk's, and k2tog's. Personally I'd stick with knitting every row, but size 15 needles to give the illusion of lace without all the work.
4. I like to stick to simple stitches when I have a fancy yarn. Any fancy stitches seem to get lost. Especially with a bulky boucle. Just a plain garter stitch (K all stitches every row) would work fine for that. With the ribbon yarn, I'd either do the plain garter stitch on really big needles for a lacy effect, or find instructions for one of those patterns where there are about 3 rows of garter, and then some other kind of stitch that leaves a big length of the ribbon yarn before the next garter section. I just saw this in a scarf at the church fair over the weekend and wish I could remember how to do it!
