Stitches

where can I find simple knitting patterns online for baby items?

I am a novice knitter and can only do knit and purl stitches so far. Can anyone direct me towards a site where I can find patterns for baby items such as hats and booties and mitts that are really simple to do and only use simple stitches?

  1. Lion Brand's web site has numerous patterns for novice knitters. This link will take you there: http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/patternFinder.fcgi?search=Search&searchText=free+knit+baby&I2.x=0&I2.y=0&I2=Search&craft=0&categoryKey=&subcategory=Any&size=&edition=&cost=Any&componentCategoryKey=Any&yarnClass=Any&searchType=0 You'll need to "register" for access, a one-time chore that's perfectly safe. Then look for "beginner" or "easy" ratings on the patterns. Bernat also has a few, mostly easy, patterns at http://www.bernat.com/search.php?key=baby+knit&searchResults=&PATTERNS=Search . You don't need to be a member to look at the pictures of the patterns, but you do have to register to download a pattern. Patons Yarns has a similar set-up to Bernat with a larger number of patterns at http://www.patonsyarns.com/search.php?key=baby+knit&searchResults=&PATTERNS=Search . When you're ready to move up to sweaters for babies, this pattern for the "Five-Hour Baby Sweater" will present you with small challenges that will help you move beyond the knit and purl stitches phase. http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/kp3.html Here's another site with a version of the same pattern: http://www.fibergypsy.com/patterns/swtrpatt.shtml
  2. Lion Brand patterns are also available at joann.com - FREE
  3. I was going to recommend the Lion Brand site, but see that someone else already has. I notice that my favorite www.coatsandclark.com isn't on the list. They have good patterns. It takes a little navigation, but once you find them they are great.
  4. Knitting Pattern Central has thousands of free patterns, loads of lovely baby things! Most patterns are far simpler than they first appear, as every pattern will comprise of knit or purl stitches. If you can knit and purl then in theory you can knit anything! I'm not the worlds greatest knitter (I avoid anything lacy like the plague) but really it's down to your attention span and how much time you have. I started off knitting hats, you can find nice patterns that knit up flat on two needles. I put off knitting in the round for a long time, but was surprised how easy it is!
  5. lionbrand.com and bernat.com On lionbrand.com, you can use their Pattern Finder, and click that you need a Beginner pattern, in Knit only. You can even specify what type of item, and what kind of yarn. I think it is the best free website out there.
