Stitches

Besides the purl and the knit stitch, are there any other kinds of stitches in knitting?

Same as above, just curious. Oh if there are, how to do them...

  1. Everything else is just a combination of knitting and purling.
  2. The more decorative stitches you see are simply knit and purl with minor alterations. Some are done by wrapping the yarn around the needle before making a knit or purl stitch to create a hole like you see in lace. Some are done by knitting into the stitch belowto create a bobble. Many stitches such as cable stitch are formed by ordinary knit and purl stitches done in a defferent order to usual.
  3. To those who believe crocheting is easier, I point out that in knitting one only needs to learn to knit and purl. Those who crochet must know how to chain, single crochet, double crochet, half-double crochet, and treble crochet. The various patterns you see in knitting are made by: Garter - knit every stitch in each row Stockinette - knit the odd rows and purl the even rows Seed stitch - K1 P1 in the odd numbered rows and then in the even numbered rows, knit each stitch that looks like a purl and purl those that look like they were knit Ribbing - K1 P1 the odd numbered rows and then knit the knits and purl the purls Twisted ribs - (K1 through the back loop and P1) all odd rows and then knit tbl the knits and purl the purls Cables - knitting stitches out of order by temporarily holding some stitches on a stitch holder Open lace - Using YARN OVERS (wrapping the yarn around the needle) to create a hole and an extra stitch. The extra stitch is then eliminated by knitting 2 stitches together And so on ... There are books with 100 different stitch patterns for an afghan. You choose those you like best for your afghan and then combine them.
  4. there are many things you can do with a knit and purl, such as a yarn over and a k2tog. i do not use them much though.
  5. There really is only the knit stitch. The purl is simply the knit in reverse (done from the other side). Everything else is just a variation of these. There are some different manoeuvres of the yarn and how you handle the stitches, but there is only one stitch. Knitting is incredibly simple!! I think you may have been referring to stitch PATTERNS, and that is a whole different question.
  6. Basically all you have to know is how to knit and purl HOWEVER there are variations on them go to, just read the left side of te page http://www.knittingfool.com/index.guest.cfm?CFID=13905110&CFTOKEN=95365011 for the variations for over 1452 different types of stitces to make for a pattern and the instructions.
  7. Nope, just those two. Everything else in knitting is just using them in different ways, at different angles, etc. Even cables are just moving a few stitches over there while you knit over here...
  8. These two stitches are the basis for all types of knitting. They are just done in different ways, the yarn is twisted, you wrap yarn around the needle before making a stitch for an open look, you do the stitches in different combinations for a different appearance of the finished fabric. If you google for "knitting videos on youtube" you will find over 50 videos that show all types of stitches being done in several techniques, like American, English, Continental, Turkish, Portuguese. These all do the same stitches but the yarn is held in different ways in the hands. That is the fun of knitting. You don't have to learn many stitches, but how you use them makes a world of difference.
