Stitches

How long should dissolvible stitches take to dissolve?

I had my gallbladder removed three weeks ago. I have sutures which are mostly under the surface of the skin, but for 2 of the 4 incisions there are stitches which poke through the skin up to the surface. I have to keep them constantly covered so they don't snag on clothing. How long should it take for them to come off? Would anything else help it along?

  1. The stitches can start to dissolve anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks. I know it may be uncomfortable, but stop putting a dressing over the top of the stitches. This will help them dry out and dissolve a bit quicker. Also as the get knocked and stuck on item of clothing they will pull and break a bit, eventually falling out all together. The 'catching' is annoying, but as long as they are not warm to the touch, sore or itchy then there good. I've had them in my mouth many times and eaten them!! Yuk! So just think yourself lucky you won't do that with yours. LOL
