How do I crochet a functional potholder?

I would like to crochet a pot holder. I found a nice pattern that is a basic circle. The thing is that I would like the potholder to be functional. Is that possible to make a crocheted potholder that is actually useful, rather than just to look nice? Is it dependent on what kind of yarn I use?

  1. Use Bernat Handicrafter Cotton or like yarn. It will stand up to the heat and they have a wise array of colors to suit your taste.
  2. Pick a pattern without large holes (preferably single crochet), larger than you think it needs to be, and preferably two layers thick, and crochet it out of wool. Wool is naturally flame retardant and will not transfer the heat to your hands.
