Stitches

should I buy a computerized sewing machine?

I am an experienced seamstress. I have a good mechanical Kenmore machine, but would like to have one with self threading needle and self winding bobbin. Am looking at a sears computer model for under $400. I really don't need all the embroidery stitches, but would like the other features. Any suggestions out there?

  1. If you are an experienced seamstress than you should know the difference the computerized sewing machine will make.
  2. :If you have money to waste
  3. I would look into a reconditioned one from a repair shop or specialty store. Buying a new sewing machine is a lot like buying a new car. The minute it is off the lot, the value goes down big time. A good quality used machine might do the same things you want and have a decent warrantee too. Also, don't let them talk you into trading in your old machine. Some of the oldies are better for heavy duty sewing like upholstery and jeans that some of the new ones can't handle.
  4. As a Bernina technician I can tell you that for under 400.00 you are not going to get a very good NEW electronic/computerized machine. BUT you can get one that is a few years old like a Bernina or Viking, Janome, White for 400.00. Especially Bernina's. Possibly you should watch on eBay or Craigslist for a good used one that is of high quality. Spending that little on a new machine that looks like it will get used alot isn't going to get you a very good one. No matter what kind. They are plastic inside and out. Also you need to be sure the dealership you buy it from has a technician in case anything goes wrong. If you do buy a highend used one like a Bernina figure in 75.00 for having it serviced. This would give you peace of mind. Also most self threaders eventually have problems so having a technician around is good.
